Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid (EFA) which provides eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) for the support of heart and brain health. An inadequate intake of EFAs can result in the development of chronic health problems that can interfere with quality of life. Deficiency in DHA is associated with cognitive decline. The Framingham Heart Study found that men and women who had an average DHA intake of 180 mg/day and an average fish intake of three servings per week had a 47% reduction in the risk of cognitive decline (1). Omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) can also support the cardiovascular system. In a clinical trial in Italy, heart attack patients were given 1000 mg per day of omega-3 EFAs. Within three months of the incidence, the risk of sudden cardiac death was reduced by 45% (2). Other researchers have found that omega-3 EFAs significantly reduced coronary mortality for people with no history of cardiovascular disease (3).

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin and an antioxidant that protects cells from pollution, toxins, and free radical damage. Vitamin E supports cardiovascular health by blocking the formation of compounds that are associated with free-radical damage. In one large epidemiological study a low level of vitamin E was found to be a greater risk for heart attack and stroke than cholesterol. Low vitamin E levels were predictive in 70% of cases for heart attack whereas high cholesterol and high blood pressure accounted for 29% and 25% of the study cases, respectively.
